The Counseling Corner: Meet the Personal and Academic Counselors

The Personal and Academic Counseling team are excited to introduce ourselves to you. We are a team of talented social workers who focus on the social, emotional, and mental health of our students. We work alongside the Director of Student and Academic Support, Anne Hagge, as well as a wonderful team of College Counselors.  Each counselor is assigned to students by their Teacher Advisor (TA) group.

I am a Personal and Academic Counselor who is new to St. Mary’s Academy this year. I am thrilled to be working with this incredible community. Prior to finding my way to St. Mary’s, I was a school social worker inside of Portland Public high schools and I also spent a couple of years leading anti-racism workshops for the Center for Equity and Inclusion.

As a counselor here, my goal is to be an excellent partner to parents. I want to work alongside you to make sure that your daughter has everything she needs in order to thrive. With students, I work to ground my practice in empathy, inclusion, accountability, and compassion. Please know that I am here as a resource for you and your family.

TAs: Daschel, Deshpande, Loser, Nyland, Zoller, Haster, Brown, Hainley, Hounton, Lund, and Metscher.

I came to St. Mary’s in February of this year to join the personal and academic counseling team. Though coming in half-way through the school year was a great way to experience the culture and community of St. Mary’s Academy quickly, I am so excited to be starting this year fresh and embark on my first full year with the students.

Before entering into my counseling role, I worked as a clinical therapist in a number of different mental health settings. I eventually settled into eating disorder treatment, which is what brought me up from San Diego, California to Portland, Oregon in 2017. Through this time I discovered how much I enjoy working with adolescents and families and that I wanted to focus my energy on this population.

It has been a true blessing being able to join the counseling team and have the opportunity to do what I love every day. The students at St. Mary’s have been so welcoming and I look forward to what this new year has in store. I believe strongly in working with the family system and want to be as accessible to parents and guardians, as I am to the students. My goal this year is to connect with as many of my families as I can and create an atmosphere within the counseling center that feels comfortable and supportive for any type of situation, big or small. I look forward to getting to know you all more and am always available through email. Here’s to the new year at St. Mary’s Academy!

TA’s: Gardner, Robinson, Frank, Higgins, Housley, Peterson, Brooks, Ellis, Faulkner, Fleming, Kelley and Hemmen.

I am excited to be starting a new school year at St. Mary’s Academy and look forward to a great year of learning and working with your student. As I start my second year at St. Mary’s, I reflect on the positive and rewarding experiences I have had and am so grateful to be a part of the St. Mary’s community and family.

Over the past ten years, I have worked in a variety of medical, mental health and educational settings with adolescents and families. As a counselor, it is my hope that this year will be full of cultivating experiences that will encourage both personal and academic growth for all students. I am looking forward to getting to know you and partnering with you and your student during their time at St. Mary’s Academy.

TAs: Sloan, Vannelli, Whitty, Sonn, Thelin, Vincent, Kaplan, Stock-Marquez, Yerton, Duda, Park and Rojas.
