Winter Sports Begin!

Alpine Skiing

Saint Mary’s Alpine Ski team returns for the 2022-23 season as the two-time defending Mt. Hood League champion. Senior Evie Kim and sophomore Renate Becker return from last year’s title-winning team to pace the Blues down the mountain. Last season Saint Mary’s finished third overall in the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association’s state championships; Becker placed twenty-fifth in the combined GS (giant slalom) and slalom overall, while Kim placed 29th.

The team has begun dryland practices and are gearing up for their first race of the season, Kelsey's Race on Jan. 7. The full race schedule can be found on the Alpine Ski schedule page on the Saint Mary’s website.

Head coach Ryan Rooper is back for his 15th season at Saint Mary’s and is rejoined by assistant coaches Marina Nimmo (dryland) and Kirstan Fengler (on-hill). Bob Stawicki, former Lake Oswego head alpine ski coach, joins the Blues to lend his professional expertise.

If you come up to the mountain to watch the team race, bring your cowbell and Saint Mary’s spirit to cheer the team on!

Basketball

Saint Mary’s Basketball will have many new faces this season when the team takes the court. Seven players return for the varsity Blues: seniors Olivia Caron and Bella Gurin; juniors Elsa Cottrell, Irena Langer, and Olivia Robinson; and sophomores My’l Cabine and Myla Dirks. Head Coach Sheena Moore is back for her second year leading the Blues and preparing her players to build on each outing with the hope of earning a post-season playoff spot.

The JV Blues are under the direction of Corrie Racanelli; St. Mary’s aluma Morgan Dunlap will provide support this season as an assistant coach for the program. Junior Julia Wiebke will provide team leadership, along with sophomores Hattie Courtney, Hannah Ickes, and Margaret Meeker.

To catch the Blues in action this season check out the team’s schedule on the Saint Mary’s website or find the livestream links on the OSAA website.

Nordic Skiing

Four veteran racers return to lead the Blues Nordic ski team this season. Juniors Abigail Dinsmoor and Ava Verala, with sophomores Solvae Carter and Caroline Cormier, are back training for the new season and waiting for the snow to fly so they can set out on the track this winter. Second-year coach Zach Sippel steps up to become the Nordic Ski Team head coach after serving last year as assistant coach. Former Saint Mary’s head coach David Burke along with assistant coaches Kate O’Sullivan and Brian Curtis are hard at work prepping the team through dryland practices for the season of racing ahead.

Catch the Blues when they race at Mount Hood’s Teacup Lake on January 7th or at Mount Hood Meadows on February 11th; the remainder of the schedule can be found on the Saint Mary’s Nordic Ski schedule page.

Swimming

Six 2022 All-Three Rivers League swimmers are back to lead the Blues Swim Team, building on their second-place finish in the Three Rivers League and fourteenth-place state meet finish last season. Seniors Serafina Ferruzzi, Anna Mann, and Sabrina McGarvey, and juniors Julissa Pernsteiner, Amelia and Gwenyth Snyder all return after strong performances at last year’s district and state meets.

The Blues are practicing at the Parkrose High School pool this season and are training hard for their first meet of the season on Dec. 8. Saint Mary’s Head Coach, Crystal Ius (’02) is back for her eleventh season, assisted by second-year Saint Mary’s coach, Kimberly Williams.
