Fall 2023 SMA MAINSTAGE THEATRE: Wonderland: A Who(orwhat)dunit

Friday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. / Saturday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. / Sunday, November 5th at 1:00 p.m.

synopsis - Wonderland: A WHOorwhatDUNIT is an original comedy about a director who is called in to rescue a production of Alice in Wonderland during the final few weeks of rehearsals. The director soon finds that all is not okay in Wonderland what with the odd noises, mysterious disappearances, and strange encounters. But what is causing all of the disturbances? Is the show haunted by the theatre ghost who was disturbed when an age-old curse is invoked, OR is there a saboteur amongst them? Confusion and chaos ensue as the director tries to pull off the seemingly impossible feat of getting the show to opening night before the ghost (or saboteur) can shut it all down. Wonderland, a play-within-a-play, is a fast-paced mystery farce that pays homage to all of the fantastical elements in Alice in Wonderland, as well as the somewhat strange and quirky habits of theatre artists.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
