Immersion Trips

St. Mary's Academy is proud to offer a global perspective on community, justice, and Christian fellowship. As such, immersion trips have been carefully crafted to bridge students to worlds deeply intwined with their own, yet seemingly disparate. The goal of all immersion trips is a cross-cultural exchange, an impact on worldview, and building community.

Jonestown: Mississippi Immersion Trip

Since 2013, SMA has brought a group of 10-13 students to Jonestown, MS in late February to live in-community with one another and Sr. Kay Burton, SNJM whose ministry lies in supporting and coordinating community programming for the people of Jonestown. By immersing themselves in the culture of the area, learning about the history of the SNJM presence there, working together on small service-jobs and chores, the St. Mary's group is given the gift of this experience, nurtured spiritually, and have a better understanding of life for those less-fortunate in our own country.

Who can participate: Current 10-12th grade students.

How to apply: In late spring, students apply to participate for the following February. Info sessions and other relevant application materials are distributed via email by the CMS office.

Nogales: Mexico-Border Immersion Trip

The border immersion is an opportunity for students in Spanish 4, Honors or AP Spanish to immerse themselves into life and ministry at the U.S./Mexico border in Nogales, Sonora (Mexico). Students and chaperones live in dorm-style lodging at HEPAC (El Hogar de Esperenza y Paz) a nonprofit organization in Nogales, serving the permanent and transient community of families and children navigating border life. Students immerse themselves in culture and learning, visiting local non-profit agencies specifically for migrants, cultural hubs, and local family homes to learn about life on the border and other relevant border policies.

Who can participate: Current 10-12th grade students in Spanish 4 or higher.

How to apply: In late spring, students apply to participate for the following November. Info sessions and other relevant application materials are distributed via email by the CMS office.
