FAQ's

Q: When do the Dragon Boat practices start?

A: On-water practices begin after spring break. Optional conditioning training will begin in early March with the other spring sports at St. Mary's and be held Wednesdays and Fridays in the SMA Weight Room after school until on-water practices commence.

Q: Where do you practice?

A: River Place Marina on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m.

Q: Are there cuts in Dragon Boating?

A: No. Teams are filled in the order of registration. We need a minimum 25 paddlers for each crew, after that paddlers are waitlisted.

Q: Are uniforms required?

A: Yes. The participant fee includes the cost of the uniforms that will belong to them and can be used in future seasons.

Q: What additional items do I need to paddle?

A: Each paddler should have rain gear, pants and a waterproof jacket. An athletic shoe,

waterproof, if possible, for the early season. Shoes with leather soles are a safety hazard. Wool socks will keep feet warm when wet. We practice regardless of the rain.

Q: Is there more for my parent to do?

A: Yes, once a paddler is placed on the team there are more waivers to be filled out, the links will be sent directly to your parents. And if you participate in the Rainier Festival in Tacoma there are additional fees.

Q: Are there weather conditions that would cancel practice?

A: Yes. Wind, thunderstorms and river flow may make practice unsafe. We will try and predict these conditions and are always watching, but sometimes conditions change quickly. If we gather at the marina and have doubts, we will cancel.
