What are Athletic Trainers?

Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, chiropractors and other members of the Sports Medicine Team. The services provided by ATs comprise of injury prevention, emergency and immediate care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Responsibilities of Athletes and Parent(s) of Athletes

  • Inform the Athletic Trainer of ALL injuries that occur during the season, whether or not the injury happened while participating in the sport. This is essential in the recovery process.
  • Inform the Athletic Trainer of ALL provider visits regarding injury and return to participation. This includes doctor, nurse practitioner, chiropractor, physical therapist or massage therapists.
  • Provide the Athletic Trainer with a written note from ALL provider visits. Documentation of an athlete’s injury and return to participation guidelines aids in communication between the physician and AT. In some cases the athlete will not be allowed to return to participation without a note from the physician.
