Winter Athletic Options
The Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA) Alpine Division has cancelled competitions for the 2020-21 winter season due to current health and safety restrictions placed on ski resorts. SMA Head Alpine Ski Coach Ryan Rooper and Assistant Coach Marina Nimmo will still offer optional in-person instruction sessions this winter for any SMA student interested following newly established safety protocols.
In-person dryland training sessions in small groups will begin in November at SMA with on-hill sessions commencing when resorts open on Mt. Hood. Students wanting to participate should contact Coach Rooper for details. Students interested in participating must complete the registration process delineated on the Athletic Registration & Eligibility webpage prior to their first session.
Plans for the 2020-21 SMA Nordic Ski team activities are in the works. The OISRA Nordic Division is still determining if a competitive race season will be possible. The dynamics of Nordic ski racing and the limited number of competitors weighs in the favor of the sport given the current safety restrictions. SMA Head Nordic Coach David Burke is working with his staff to provide the best possible options for interested SMA students. Students interested in learning more about Nordic skiing who have not previously participated can contact Coach Burke for more information.
SMA Head Basketball Coach Dewey Taylor and Assistant Kiko Flennaugh are setting up a schedule for optional in-person, pre-season basketball activity for all SMA students interested in getting ready for the upcoming season slated to start on December 28. Students who have not been involved in SMA Basketball prior and are a current SMA student can contact Coach Flennaugh for more information.
The pre-season in-person activity will allow students to come to the SMA gym and work on individual skills in an open gym setting. Follow safety guidelines, the 45 minute sessions will be limited to 5 students and will be managed through an online sign-up program, no drop-in use will be available. Entrance will be limited to the SMA student only to maintain safety protocols.
Students interested in participating must complete the registration process delineated on the Athletic Registration & Eligibility webpage prior to their first session. Online sign-up for gym sessions will be available the week of November 16.
Plans for the 2020-21 SMA Swim Team activities are underway. Clearly, one of the more challenging sports to support during the pandemic, SMA Head Coach Crystal Ius is investigating options to provide connection and activity for all SMA students interested in participating in swim team activities this winter. Look for updates later in November/early December regarding what the season activities will look like for the Blues and around the metro area.
