SMA Students Excel in the Arts and Academics!

St. Mary's students have been busy this year, excelling in academics, the arts and more.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Each year, St. Mary’s Academy student artists and writers submit their work to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards with great success. This year, among thousands of submissions, SMA students won 15 Gold Keys, 27 Silver Keys, and 36 Honorable Mentions from Scholastic. There is so much creativity to celebrate, and we are so proud of our SMA artists and writers. Here is some of the award-winning artwork.

2021 National Merit Finalists

Five members of the St. Mary’s class of 2021 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their extraordinary academic achievement. The finalists are Elizabeth Buckenmeyer, Ruby Lewis, Katherine Maier, Gwyneth Merryman and Ella Shin. These seniors represent less than one percent of all U.S. high schoolers that took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Merit Scholarship Program awards individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

SMA Mock Trial Team

Out of 17 teams that competed at the Class Room Law Project Oregon State Mock Trial Competition in mid-March, St. Mary’s Academy finished 4th and 5th, the only school to have two teams place in the top five. The Mock Trial team is coached by faculty member Donald Housley and SMA past-parent Andrew Lauersdorf. Below are photos of Devika ‘21 and Ava ’21 accepting the awards from the Classroom Law Project.

St. Mary’s Students Compete in Oregon Thespian Regional Acting Competition

For the last several years, St. Mary’s students competed in the Regional Acting Competition through the Oregon Thespians. The  is an amazing chance for students to receive feedback on their work from professionals from all over the state. This year the Regional Acting Competition was hosted virtually and 11 brave students set out to participate through video submissions.

For the first time ever, representatives of St. Mary’s not only earned a Regional Finalist place, ranking in the top 20% of all competitions, but also secured 4 qualifications for the State Thespian Excellence Showcase (Thespys™) state competition,  representing the top 10% of all entries. Below are the students who participated in the competition and who will advance to the state competition in April! Theatre faculty member Jordan Beck notes that these students “truly went above and beyond for the love of their art.”
