Meet your New Alumnae Director, Mary Hrkac '86

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I’m from the South Side of Chicago and my favorite Chicago-inspired meal is for sure a Chicago hotdog. I am godmother to Izabela and Nicholas. I’ve lived in Utah, Alaska, Croatia, and most recently California for 19 years. I’ve been in the wine business for over 20 years, 17 of those years I worked for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. I feel incredibly honored to be the Director of Alumnae and look forward to connecting with the community.

What is your favorite memory from when you were a student at St. Mary’s?

Do I have to pick one? There were so many magical moments. Graduation day was very memorable to me. It just felt so special to be with my family and friends and realize what St. Mary’s provided me.

What excites you most about working at SMA?

Since I can’t say everything! Getting to know the staff and faculty would be at the top of my list.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your role as Alumnae Director?

Build a bigger, stronger network of alumnae

Can you describe what motivates you the most? 

Finding innovative solutions to problems, thinking outside the box. Being creative and exceeding expectations with the WOW factor.

What about the SNJM Mission empowers you?

St. Mary’s has always been a place that nurtures extraordinary women leaders, and I am inspired by the two words of the 12 founding sisters “We Believe”.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Travel, cook, swim, and explore the Willamette Valley wine region and history to name a few. Additionally, I represent the City of Portland as a Greeter and Official Ambassador of Goodwill as a Royal Rosarian.

Lastly, what is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Have passion for what you do.
