Game Changing Gym Renovations are Underway!

Dear SMA Community,

It is with great enthusiasm we share that on Tuesday, May 30, we began the exciting summer-long project to renovate our athletics facilities at St. Mary's Academy!

The 2023-2024 school year will bring with it a new-and-improved gym space and programming that will impact the daily life of our entire student body and our community who participate in games, events, and tours. This renovation includes the following updates:

  • Fresh paint
  • New bleachers
  • Branded decor and padding
  • State-of-the-art digital scoreboard and OSAA shot clock
  • Athletic Director facilities
  • Modern training room
  • Safety and electrical improvements

To bring this project to life we partnered with a female team from BORA Architects, who prioritize working with women and minority-owned organizations, along with R&H Construction. While this renovation is underway, we will host all SMA summer camps and sports activities at Portland State University’s Viking Pavilion at the Peter Stott Center and other local athletic facilities.

Building off last summer’s updates to our Wellness Corridor and STEM spaces  where students now experience dance and yoga classes, weight room training, engineering in the FAB Lab and more the new gym renovation is the next step in continued growth and improvements of our historic building.

This summer-long renovation was made possible by generous donors and SMA community members who believe in our school and our mission to provide education that serves the whole person – including athletics.

As we approach our 165th year, this state-of-the-art gym renovation is the foundation of a larger Athletics Campaign, Co-Chaired by Greg Meyer and Karis Stoudamire-Phillips ‘94, that is a continued effort to ignite the future of St. Mary’s Academy's athletics, programs, and people.

We are eager for everyone to return in the fall and experience the new and beautiful gym space that will be enjoyed for many years to come!

Wishing you all a joyful summer,

Emily Niedermeyer Becker ‘86
