Back to School with a Focus on Connection & Wellness

As St. Mary's prepares to welcome students back to school this fall, one thing is certain, "being together is a vital component of what makes St. Mary’s so special," states Principal Nicole Foran.  She adds, "Even the recent news of the Delta variant is not dampening our excitement to begin the year. We’re confident that no matter what the changing landscape may be, we will safely navigate a path forward so that our students continue to learn, connect and thrive."

The changing nature of the COVID-19 situation will certainly require flexibility for staff and students alike.  That being said, the last year and a half has provided many learnings that will serve as the foundation for how St. Mary's will approach the academic year.  Principal Foran explains, "We've learned so much about how we deliver our SMA education and support our students.  We've learned just how nimble we can be to meet the needs of our families and deliver the best education possible."

One of the areas that will see a change is an adjusted bell/class schedule for students.  "We know that going into this year, we will need time for our students to connect, build relationships and focus on wellness in addition to academics."  The adjusted schedule includes daily supported study before and after school, weekly teacher office hours and professional development, as well as a weekly Flex Block that can be used to support myriad student priorities.  As in past years, the schedule will also have time built in weekly for Activity Block for students to participate in extra and co-curricular activities as well as weekly Mass in the chapel.

This year's faculty/staff in-service will also focus on topics that have risen in priority as a result of the pandemic.  Principal Foran elaborates,  "We've always made wellness a focus at St. Mary's, particularly given the critical importance for young women.  This year, though, there is a specific need to dedicate attention to healing given the trauma that our students, and the world, have and continue to experience.  We are ensuring our teachers are prepared to guide our students through what is certain to be another challenging school year."

The good news, shares Principal Foran, is that "our students are so excited to get back to school, spend time daily with friends, participate in sports and activities, and get as close as possible to 'normal'.  St. Mary’s is committed to making that happen.”
