2021 Fall Sports Preview

The St. Mary's Academy Blues are excited to return to the field, court and course this fall with soccer, volleyball and cross country practices underway as of August 16.  With some new faces in the athletics department and coaching staff as well as strong returning athletes and fresh team of newcomers, the Blues are looking forward to the upcoming seasons.

Following is a preview of what to look forward to.

Cross Country

Returning on a short turnaround only four months since end of the 2021-22 season, the Blues are looking forward to getting back on the course this fall. Back for the Blues this season are seniors Kira Mahaffy, Georgia Sims and spring 2021 All-Three Rivers League juniors Ciara Pruett and Sadie Drucker. Head Coach Charles Douglas is back leading the program for his eighth season and is joined by assistant coaches Gil Gongora, Liz McCullough and Mariah Johnson. The team looks to build on last years’ experience with the goal of moving up the podium at the OSAA state in November.

Cheer on the Blues at one of their upcoming meets. Find the team’s full schedule on the SMA cross-country webpage; follow the team and individual runner’s results at Athletic.net.

The Blues soccer teams return to the pitch this fall led by four All-Three Rivers League players, senior Maggie Farra and juniors Maya Johnson, Elena Williams and Lehua Dowsett. Joining them will be returning varsity players, seniors Annie Lefever and Audrey Lincoln and juniors Evie Kim, Singe Hasle Wasik and Marin Adamson. The team went 7-3-1 last spring, finishing third in the tough Three Rivers League during the short six-week season.

New SMA Head Coach Scotty Baxter will lead the Blues. Coach Baxter brings a multi-dimensional background as a player, coach, club administrator and referee at the club, interscholastic and intercollegiate level. JV Coach Aaron Tasker returns to lead the junior varsity squad and Corrie Racanelli joins the Blues staff to guide the JV2 team.

Come out and cheer on the Blues at Buckman Field; JV2 & JV matches at 4:15 PM and varsity at 6:15 PM. Find their schedules on the Teams and Schedules page of our website.

The Blues volleyball players have been working hard this summer to prepare for their return to the court this fall. Returning for the varsity squad are seniors Berit Brecke, Emilie Colner, Emma Iwaniec and Kira Mish, junior Mia Fedota and sophomores Adrienne Nguyen and Julissa Pernsteiner. Mish, Fedota and Nguyen all earned All-Three Rivers League recognition for their play during the spring 2021.

The varsity team is again under the direction of head coach Kelsey Eby and assisted by Megan (Thompson) Pechmann. Maddie Kuther returns as JV coach and SMA alumna Natalie Nielsen is back leading the JV2 team.

Assistant Athletic Director Sanjay Bedi

The SMA Athletic Department is happy to introduce new assistant athletic director Sanjay Bedi. Sanjay has been in education for over 20 years serving as a teacher, coach and then athletic director at Parkrose, Benson and Roosevelt high schools. He has a thorough understanding of interscholastic athletics, the dynamics of working as a part of a team as well as leading the team efficiently and effectively. His wealth of experience managing athletic programs, building community and working cooperatively make him a great addition to our staff.

Sanjay will be helping cover the tasks previously supported by SMA Athletic Department assistants Kiko Flennaugh and Bill Winter. St. Mary’s is extremely grateful to Kiko and Bill for their extraordinary assistance this past school year. They were invaluable in supporting our student-athletes and coaches in a variety of areas while still coaching their respective sports of basketball and golf.

Thank you help us in welcoming Sanjay to our community and expressing our thanks to Kiko and Bill for their concerted efforts to support our programs this past year!

Head Basketball Coach Sheena Moore

This past July, St. Mary’s hired Sheena Moore as head basketball coach. Coach Moore brings a diverse background in basketball as a player, trainer and coach. Coach Moore prepped at Everett High School in Lansing, Michigan and went on to play at University of Las Vegas, Nevada on a basketball scholarship. A three-time all-conference award winner, she helped her team to the NCAA National Finals and was named to the all-tournament team. After graduating from UNLV, she played professionally for seven years in Europe.

Coach Moore began work as a basketball trainer after her return to the states before moving to the interscholastic ranks. Most recently, she has been the varsity assistant coach at Lakeridge High School. She appreciates the opportunity coaching basketball provides her to encourage female student-athletes to strive to be their best and feel empowered, and she emphasizes positivity, effort, accountability and teamwork both on and off the court. 2021 SMA interim head coach Kiko Flennaugh will stay on to assist Moore with the program. Additionally, Coach Sheena will be joining the SMA Front Office staff supporting Athletics and Admissions.

Please join us in welcoming Coach Moore to our St. Mary’s Academy community!
