St. Mary’s Academy had their strongest showing at Portland State University’s 29th Annual Young Historian’s Conference, with eight SMA senior student presenters including the 1st place winner, whose paper analyzed Victor Hugo le Grand’s work and its effectiveness in shaping an unfavorable view of Napolean III, who would be forever defined as “Napoléon le Petit”.
Laughter, connections, support and tears of joy filled the air inside the Oregon Convention Center’s Portland ballroom for St. Mary’s Academy’s 31st Annual Auction. Towards the end of the evening, St. Mary’s Academy President, Christina Friedhoff, proudly announced the silent and live auction event met the goal of one million dollars.
The stated mission of St Mary’s Academy’s UNITE Day reads “By implementing a day committed to equity and inclusion, we strive to promote cultural relevancy, identify and eliminate microaggressions and discrimination, remind ourselves of the necessity of environmental conservation, and inspire positive change as we refocus the lens of social justice on our own community,” but in the words of senior Madeleine Adriance, UNITE Day student director, UNITE is about telling stories.
From St. Mary’s Academy athletes and Marian singers to aspiring scientists and school-wide leaders, the Science Olympiad team at SMA boasts one of the most diverse group of students on campus; despite this diversity, they all share one thing in common: an interest in the methodical study of science.

"This is everyone’s victory,” said St. Mary's Academy sophomore, Belise Nishimwe, after being announced winner of Oregon's Poetry Out Loud championship early last month at the state's capital in Salem, Oregon. Belise was one of nine regional finalists who competed at the state Poetry Out Loud event at Salem Public Library and will advance in the national Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington D.C. at the end of April with over 50 other students from across the country.
During her four years at St. Mary's Academy, senior Mya Brazile has remained fully involved in all things SMA, from athletics to leadership, to clubs and activities. Mya now represents SMA off campus as one of the newest Princesses on the 2019 Rose Festival Court.
From volunteering at local parks to learning important civil war history, this year's Mississippi immersion service learning trip was a beautiful demonstration of community both among our students and the people they encountered each day in the southern state.
