SMA Students Bring Home National Awards in Writing and Arts

St. Mary’s Academy has a rich tradition of excellence in both the humanities and arts, and this year’s awards in writing and visual arts confirms that the tradition continues.

On the writing front, St. Mary’s has captured both national and regional recognition.   Escribe Maria, St. Mary’s student-produced Literary Arts magazine, took home top honors with the award for the “Most Outstanding High School Literary-Art Magazine for 2018” in the national contest sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association.  Faculty advisor Sara Salvi comments that “it is especially notable that St. Mary’s produced this work as a club consisting of 16 students, not as part of a class, the usual platform at many schools.”

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the country’s oldest student award recognition program, and St. Mary’s writers once again distinguished themselves amongst their peers.  The awards recognize the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and this year students across America submitted nearly 350,000 original works in 29 different categories of art and writing.  St. Mary’s won more writing awards than any other school in Oregon with 38 students winning 65 writing awards, and 14 students winning 17 Gold Key Awards, the highest regional award.  And in the arts, 35 students took home 105 awards with 26 Gold Key Awards bestowed on St. Mary’s students.

Salvi shares that all participating students really are to be congratulated on their efforts.  “It takes courage to put your work out there for judgement by individuals who don’t know you.  We have so many dedicated, fearless writers and artists.  We are proud of all those who entered.”
