The St. Mary's Fund is the financial base that supports all aspects of a St. Mary's education. Your annual gift to the St. Mary's Fund directly benefits each student at St. Mary's by supporting academic excellence to over 600 young women. Funds raised through the St. Mary's Fund campaign support continued academic excellence and an annual financial aid commitment of $633,000. One-third of the students at St. Mary's Academy receive financial aid. In addition, the campaign funds the difference between annual tuition at St. Mary's, which is $9,050 for the 2007-08 academic year, and the actual cost to educate one young woman at St. Mary's for one year, $12,350.
The founding Sisters of the Holy Names called on the community for support when they founded our school 148 years ago. We, too, turn to the community and ask you to please assist us with carrying forward the gift of a St. Mary's education for young women. Learn more about our fundraising efforts from St. Mary's Academy Director of Development, Margueritte Kim.
A portion of the funds raised each year for the Annual Giving Campaign are raised through our fall and spring phonathons. Phonathons are staffed by volunteer parents, students, alumnae, faculty, and staff. Annually, the phonathons raise about $80,000. To learn more about our Annual Giving Campaign, contact Anne Lawrance, Director of Annual Giving.
In 2007-08, the actual cost of educating each student at St. Mary's is $12,350. In an effort to make our tuition affordable to a broad range of students, we offer tuition at $9,050, granting an automatic subsidy of $3,300 to all families. We ask our parents, alumnae, and friends to help us make up this difference. We are grateful to those families who have committed to paying the actual cost of education for their child through the ACE (Actual Cost of Education) Program.
By donating your vehicle to Volunteers of America on behalf of St. Mary's Academy, the school benefits from most of the proceeds of its sale. For more information, contact St. Mary's Academy Alumnae Development, Coralynn Arrigotti Petrie '83 at (503) 721-7710.
St. Mary's Academy relies on the support of the community to sustain its award-winning academic programs, and we are grateful for every gift received. Since the announcement of the Archdiocese of Portland's decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, St. Mary's Academy has received numerous questions regarding whether our school may be impacted by this decision.
We are taking this opportunity to clarify St. Mary's relationship with the Archdiocese of Portland. St. Mary's Academy, founded and governed by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, is financially independent of the Archdiocese of Portland. St. Mary's Academy's assets, endowment funds, capital campaign funds, and operating budget are in no way co-mingled with assets or funds of the Portland Archdiocese. Therefore, we want to assure you that our current capital campaign and endowment fund, as well as our day-to-day operations and funding, is not impacted by the filing of bankruptcy by the Archdiocese.
As a Catholic school we work with the Archdiocesan Department of Education and its schools on staff development opportunities, on curriculum formation, and the sharing of information. Although we are independent, we appreciate this relationship in educating our youth.
Indeed, these are challenging times for the Archdiocese of Portland, and we pray for God's guidance in seeking a just resolution for these issues. Thank you for your concern and continual support of St. Mary's Academy.
