The goal of Augustana Academy is to increase the academic and social success of NE Portland 4th - 8th graders by providing a structured after-school program focused on the arts, academics, fitness, social and community activities. They need volunteers who want to tutor, lead or assist with workshops, prepare and serve snacks, monitor the reception desk or assist with office tasks. Volunteers are needed for one or two hours each week (or more!)

Doernbecher, the first full-service children's hospital in the Pacific Northwest, offers the most comprehensive program with full-spectrum pediatric care for hospitalized children. As a volunteer you would work with patients, families, and staff to make the hospital experience better for all. There are approximately 230 volunteers at any given time. Friendly House is a nonprofit organization that believes in the value of community. Six different programs help serve all ages and backgrounds in the Northwest Portland area. Volunteer opportunities for teens are available in preschool, youth programs, and senior programs. Also needed are teens to help with seasonal programs like Holiday Store, which provides food, coats, and gifts to low-income families and individuals.

Girls on the Run is for 3rd through 5th grade girls and is an experiential learning program that combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with character-building and self-esteem enhancing warm-ups and workouts that encourage emotional, social, mental, and physical development. High school students will act as mentors and instructors.
Participants meet twice a week after school for 12 weeks and are led by certified Girls on the Run instructors. The session climax is a community 5K event that enables every girl the opportunity to reach her goal.

This middle school in the Jefferson HS district runs after-school sports programs: for fall, Soccer, Volleyball, and Basketball. They want YOU to coach, referee, facilitate, supervise, and do whatever it takes to make sure the kids in the program have a good experience. Peninsula Children's Center is the oldest and largest child care provider in North Portland. A nonprofit organization, Peninsula has the capacity to serve 245 children ages 6-weeks to 12-years-old. Providence Child Center provides a continuum of services for children including skilled nursing care, a Montessori School, a child development program, and comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation and treatment services. The Center for Medically Fragile Children at Providence Child Center is a nursing facility providing care for children in a residential setting. Fifty-eight beds are dedicated to children needing long-term chronic care and short-term respite, and end-of-life care. Volunteers are needed in many capacities within the Child Center. This has proven to be a very meaningful site for SMA students.

This is a Jesuit middle school located at St. Andrew Parish. During the school year, students are at school until 5:15 P.M. Volunteers are needed to help with Homework Club from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. The work focus is on tutoring, games and supervision, and building relationships with the students. It is challenging work that will give great rewards. Homework Club can only use up to 8 high school volunteers/day, so sign up early.
DURING THE SUMMER: Volunteers are VERY MUCH NEEDED to work with the prospective 6th graders. The "Summer Academy" for 5th graders hoping to attend St. Andrew in the fall begins in July and runs for most of the month from approximately 8:00 am - 11:00 am. Call for more information.

This site is very close to SMA! The YMCA is a nonprofit organization providing quality, affordable childcare to the Portland Metro area. Market Street is the newest Child Development Center, and it serves up to 80 children. The children range in age from 6 weeks to 5 years. They follow the Creative Curriculum in the classroom and teach social skills every day. They also have an outdoor play structure and an art room. Fun!
