A comprehensive program for elder care. Cedar Sinai Park encompasses Robison Jewish Health Center, primarily a nursing home facility, and Rose Schnitzer Manor, an assisted living facility. Volunteers can work at either or both sites. Typical work entails one-on-one time with individuals doing crafts, reading, writing letters, taking residents on walks. There are also many planned activities such as parties, playing games (bingo, etc.) and Jewish religious services. There are no activities on the Sabbath (Saturdays). Hours are somewhat flexible. Cedar Sinai Park works with the Jewish Community Center.

Community Energy Project, Inc., empowers people in the Portland metro area to maintain healthier, more livable homes, control their utility costs, and conserve natural resources through education, hands-on training, and distribution of weatherization, water conservation, and lead poisoning prevention materials. We also provide direct weatherization and water conservation services to seniors and people with disabilities. Volunteers are needed in many areas: weatherization, outreach, and warehouse and office work.

This is a tremendous opportunity because no hospice program has allowed teen volunteers before. Hospice is expert, compassionate care provided to adults with terminal illnesses where cure is no longer a realistic goal. The focus of hospice is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their families. Volunteers would be thoroughly trained (call for dates) and would have significant opportunity to work with dying patients: a very challenging, but wholly rewarding experience. Volunteers must be at least going into junior year.

Loaves and Fishes, The Meals-on-Wheels People, provides a hot noontime meal to seniors in the Portland metropolitan area. It also helps seniors remain independent by connecting them to available resources in the community, and by offering a variety of opportunities for socialization. Volunteers are always needed to help deliver meals (if 18 years old), serve in one of our 16 group dining rooms, or help with on-going center activities. Students may also deliver with their parents.

A newer facility in the heart of old town, Portland, serving residents who are disabled, chronically ill or in need of support to live as independently as possible. The majority of residents come from the old town/Burnside area. Your work here will be to lessen the isolation of chronically ill and home bound people by building relationships with them. Specific activities include visiting with residents, playing chess or other games, sharing meals, etc. A challenging, but rewarding place to work.

A residential Care Facility for adults with Alzheimer's and other special needs. The facility has several different levels of care for people in various stages of Alzheimer's. This community center in Multnomah Village provides services to older adults, helping to find ways to live independently, actively and with dignity. The Senior Center is open Mon - Fri., 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. You could teach basic computer skills to seniors, escort trips, or just do "friendly visits" with elderly folks who come to the center. Mornings to early afternoon hours are the best. Great summer placement. Also some opportunity to teach ESL to recent immigrants. (Loaves and Fishes is located in the same building, but is a different program.)

NWPP is considered a leading advocate for the poor and homeless in Portland. Staff coordinate with volunteers and the community providing whatever services the elderly need to be self-reliant and live independently. Volunteer opportunities could include friendly visiting, grocery shopping, or working at the NWPP office. Their office is very close to school. SMA and NWPP have been working together for many years through a program called "Friends Across Generations." Through this wonderful program, a pair of students commits to visiting a senior citizen in the downtown area once a week for the entire school year.

Volunteers are needed to assist a disabled person or elderly person or couple in Northeast Portland for this Metropolitan Family Services program. Volunteers would provide "friendly visits," one-on-one time at least 4 hours per month (or more) to help with shopping, transportation, house keeping, yard work, etc. Other options include 1) Home Repair: doing small repair jobs around the house and 2) a telephone reassurance service: calling a person at least once/month to check in. All these services allow the resident to remain in their own home and not be moved to a nursing facility. Volunteers will be trained, but will need good personal discipline.

An assisted living environment for elderly people (residents live in their own apartments). Help needed to visit one-on-one and help with planned activities such as bingo, cards, arts/crafts, poetry/literature reading, etc. Musicians and singers wanted! It is a great opportunity to meet and learn from people with much life experience! Help is also needed as "pen pals" to send notes, cards, etc. to some residents who never get mail. Saturdays are game days!
