Working with People with Disabilities
The following placements include after school programs, event centered programs, and summer day camps and summer overnight camps. Volunteers have a wide variety of jobs available in working with people with disabilities, all providing hands-on contact and some expecting personal care responsibilities.

Provides outdoor adventures for people with and without physical disabilities. Participants go on canoe trips, fishing, hiking, camping and more. Volunteers serve as assistants to people with disabilities. Adventures run mid-week and on the weekends. Great summer project! Call for event times and application.

The after school program is with children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. Assist in the after school programs, and occasionally during school breaks. A wonderful environment with a dedicated and well trained staff. Located in Aloha.

Arc of Washington County also runs a kid's summer program is for children ages 5-21. This program runs during the summer Monday through Friday from 8:00 - 6:00. They offer arts and crafts; sing-a-longs; videos; water play including sprinklers, water balloons, and squirt guns. They also plan to bowl, picnic and go to the zoo and OMSI.

Community Energy Project, Inc., empowers people in the Portland metro area to maintain healthier, more livable homes, control their utility costs, and conserve natural resources through education, hands-on training, and distribution of weatherization, water conservation, and lead poisoning prevention materials. We also provide direct weatherization and water conservation services to seniors and people with disabilities. Volunteers are needed in many areas: weatherization, outreach, and warehouse and office work.

Overnight camp for people with disabilities. Volunteers live with campers and assist the staff in all aspects of the camp to ensure a safe, healthy and fun environment. Two, one-week sessions this summer. Located at Camp Easter Seals, Washington, near Tacoma (2+ hr. Drive); provide your own transportation.

Volunteers must be 16 years old before start of camp.

Do you like to work with kids? Are you crazy about horses? Do you enjoy the thrill of working on a special event? If so, this is the project for you. It's not necessary to have horse experience as we provide all the education you'll need in a two-hour volunteer training session. There are opportunities for many different kinds of volunteerism. Opportunities exist at the barn, such as leading a horse during lessons, sidewalking with a student during lessons, stable management & horse care, and photography & video. Volunteers are also need for special events and in the administrative office.

L'Arche Nehalem is part of L'Arche International, a world-wide network of homes where people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them live in community. L'Arche exists to provide the experiences and support which each individual needs to live a meaningful and productive life. Volunteers are needed for cooking, gardening, repairs, or general recreation with the residents.

Held at Camp Arrah Wanna in Welches, OR, for youth with neuromuscular diseases. Camp activities: swimming, wheelchair sports, crafts, campfires, etc. An excellent opportunity to develop friendships, share interests, and build self-confidence. Work one-on-one with campers around the clock to provide care, supervision, and companionship. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Applications are due mid spring. Contact the MDA Office to request that an application be sent to you.

Portland Impact's services for seniors and adults with disabilities help people to be healthy and active, and to remain independent in their own homes. Volunteers could assist with meal sites and activity centers, shopping trips and friendly visits, yard work, and multicultural events.

Providence Child Center provides a continuum of services for children including skilled nursing care, a Montessori School, a child development program, and comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation and treatment services. The Center for Medically Fragile Children at Providence Child Center is a nursing facility providing care for children in a residential setting. Fifty-eight beds are dedicated to children needing long-term chronic care and short-term respite, and end-of-life care. Volunteers are needed in many capacities within the Child Center. This has proven to be a very meaningful site for SMA students.

This wonderful program offers people with developmental or physical disabilities many different athletic opportunities throughout the year. You would work as an assistant coach. Sign-ups one to two months before the season begins, normally you must attend a coaches meeting - see SOOR web page. Sports and approximate dates include: Aquatics, Bowling, Soccer or Volleyball (Sept. - Nov.); Basketball (Nov - Feb.); Skiing (Alpine or Nordic), or Ice Skating (Jan - Mar.); Power lifting or Gymnastics (Feb - May); Athletics (Track and Field), Tennis (Mar - May); Softball or Golf (June- Aug.)

A Vancouver placement! Be a sighted guide for residential students in occasional recreational activities. Volunteer for tutoring, swimming, etc. Daily opportunities for reading and other tutoring are also available. Occasional summer camps available, call WSSB for details.
