Each year, the freshmen cite the Frosh Lock In as their favorite St. Mary's event. This unique and memorable event begins at school at 8 p.m. and continues throughout the evening until 7 a.m. the next morning. During this time, the freshmen play games, perform karaoke, watch movies, make crafts, and eat and talk the night away. In short, the Lock In is an organized slumber party for an entire class of freshmen girls.
In late May, the freshman class heads out downtown to see city sights, take in a movie at a theater all to themselves, and have a picnic in a park. This is the final community building activity during the academic year and is great fun for all.
It's a girl thing! The sophomore class celebrates spring with their own special night of dinner and activities at St. Mary's. There are a few surprises that make the evening memorable.
St. Mary's has four dances throughout the school year. In the fall, the sophomore class officers plan and host the first dance. The Frosh-Soph dance, held in the gym, is very casual and a great way for underclassmen to get to know each other. Upperclassmen are encouraged to come, as well.
The annual Father-Daughter Dinner & Dance is a highlight for many students. Held early in the school year, it's a great opportunity for SMA fathers to meet each other and for the girls to get dressed up and dance with their dads and each other.
The senior class officers organize the Winter Semi-Formal Dance. It takes place at an off-campus site, usually at a ballroom in downtown Portland. It is open to all St. Mary's students. The final dance of the year, planned by the junior class officers, is the Junior-Senior Prom. Like the Semi-Formal, this special dance is held at a ballroom off-campus. As per tradition, only junior and senior students and their dates may attend.
