College Counseling College Counseling

 

College counselors Paula Sutton and Sharon Ivey will give you an overview of the college research and application process at this informative meeting. Juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

 

St. Mary's offers a comprehensive college counseling program. The college counseling staff works with students by visiting classes the freshman and sophomore years, and meets individually with students beginning their junior year. The goal is to assist each student in finding the college that is the best fit based on her needs and interests.

Highlights of the college counseling program include:

  • Parent information nights
  • College financial aid night
  • Individual meetings with parents and students
  • Over 100 college representativess visit SMA
  • PLAN administered to sophomores
  • PSAT administered to juniors

Contact Your Counselor
If you have a question or concern about the college process we encourage you to contact your college counselor. At SMA, students are assigned a college counselor according to their TA Group. Listed below you will find contact information for the college counselors and a list of our TA groups for the classes of 2008 and 2009. Paula is full-time and Sharon is part-time, so TA assignments are balanced accordingly.

Services by Grade Level

9th Grade

In the spring the college counseling office sponsors a 9th-10th grade college information night for parents and gives an overview to students during class. Our goal is to talk about college in the context of the high school experience and answer questions.

10th Grade

Sophomores will take the PLAN in October during school. This is a practice ACT. In the spring the college counseling office sponsors a 9th-10th grade college information night for parents and gives an overview to students during class. Our goal is to talk about college in the context of the high school experience and answer questions.

11th Grade

  • Juniors will take the PSAT in October during school. This is a practice SAT.
  • In September a Junior College Night is scheduled to give parents and students an overview of the college research and application process.
  • Through the fall, students may attend sessions offered by college representatives at SMA (over 100 colleges visit SMA each year). This provides a great opportunity for students to hear about what a college has to offer in terms of academics and campus life.
  • A financial aid presentation focusing on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is given in December.
  • In January we begin having individual college counseling appointments with students to guide them through the college process.

12th Grade

  • In September a Senior College Night is offered to give parents and students an overview of the college application process as it unfolds during the senior year.
  • Throughout senior year, college counseling appointments are available to students on an as needed basis (we encourage frequent meetings).
  • Periodic meetings are scheduled with the senior TAs to discuss the application process.
  • In December, we offer a financial aid presentation focusing on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
