SENIOR WINS WRTIERS’ ORGANIZATION HONOR

St. Mary’s Academy senior Anne Walla has won an honorable mention in the prestigious Willamette Writers’ Kate Herzog Scholarship for her story Waterlilies in November.  The annual Kate Herzog Scholarship award for promising writers awards not only modest college scholarships but arranges for the winners to have a consult with an agent, editor or film producer.  As a winner, Walla is invited to attend the Willamette Writers Conference in Portland, Oregon, where she will mingle with current and aspiring writers.

Willamette Writers is the largest writers' organization in Oregon and one of the largest writers' organizations in the United States. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt Oregon corporation led by volunteers. Elected officials and directors administer an active program of monthly meetings, special seminars, workshops and conferences. Continuing with established programs and starting new ones is only made possible by strong volunteer support. Members continually explore other ways to interact in the literary community.

Willamette Writers' goal is to provide and encourage a creative environment and support system for current and aspiring writers. Since its beginning in 1965, Willamette Writers has provided meeting places for the exchange of ideas and information and has initiated programs designed to help writers increase skills related to the craft of writing.

Founded in 1859 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, St. Mary’s Academy of Portland, is Oregon’s oldest continuously operating secondary school and one of 716 all-female schools in the country.  The student body represents a diverse background of young women from over 30 urban, suburban, and rural communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington.  St. Mary’s Academy is distinguished by its development of the whole person, and is the only school in the state to receive three U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools awards.
