ST. MARY’S ACADEMY WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
As St. Mary’s Blues golf coach for the past 16 years, Dan Friedhoff has guided a lot of players and was very excited when he met the team he assembled in the wake of the school’s state victory last year. “This is one of the best teams I’ve had in my 16 years of coaching,” said Friedhoff. As this year’s 6A Coach of the Year, an honor he’s received five times before, he knows what he’s talking about. The team carried this year’s state match and won back-to-back titles. In the past 11 seasons, the Blues have won five titles, including another back-to-back performance in 1998 and 1999.
“After the first day, we were five strokes up and it was uncanny how composed and confident the team was,” says Friedhoff. “The first nine of the second day, we shot so well that we effectively put the other teams behind us.” On the final day of competition, sophomore Alexandra Uduk and junior Audrey Dalton both shot a 79, Rachael Fischer, an 83 and Erika Foster, an 82. “Our school is so excited and proud of our team,” says Principal Pat Barr. “This just shows that you can be a young woman with smarts, sports ability and soul and achieve anything!”
