ST. MARY'S ACADEMY WELCOMES PEGGY FLEMING

10-11-04 — St. Mary's Academy, the Food for Thought committee, and event chair Barbara Chalmers will host the school's eleventh annual Food for Thought scholarship luncheon on Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at the Hilton Portland (921 S.W. Sixth Ave). Doors open at 11 a.m. for a social reception and the luncheon program will begin at noon. Individual tickets, $75; table sponsorships begin at $750 [table seats 10].

Olympic gold medalist and three-time World champion Peggy Fleming will keynote this year's event. Ms. Fleming's platform is inspirational in nature based on her life experiences as an athlete, daughter, wife, mother, sports commentator, and breast cancer survivor. Don't miss this opportunity to see and learn from one of sport's most graceful symbols and most identifiable personalities.

Luncheon proceeds benefit St. Mary's scholarship program for students requiring tuition assistance. School President Christina Friedhoff says, "During this time when the need for tuition assistance is increasing among our families, we are extremely grateful for the generous hearts at our scholarship luncheon." Join us! Together, we will raise scholarship funds for St. Mary's Academy students.

During the luncheon's 2003 appeal, St. Mary's student Sarah Staben '05 talked about the importance of contributing to St. Mary's financial aid program. "Throughout my life people have told me that I am full of potential, St. Mary's Academy has helped me apply that potential." She added, "St. Mary's gives young women stability and consistency in life, good friends, and caring teachers." Without the aid of tuition assistance, Sarah's dream of a St. Mary's education would not have been possible.

St. Mary's is committed to enrolling students from diverse economic, ethnic, and social backgrounds. As part of that commitment, the school's tuition assistance program awards aid to families on a need-basis. This program enables each and every young woman in our community the opportunity to choose St. Mary's for an enriching and rewarding high school experience. For the 2004-05 school year, St. Mary's is grateful to have the ability to award $481,000 through this program serving 170 of our 570 students.

In 2003, Sally Ride addressed St. Mary's students during a special assembly in the school's auditorium and later spoke at the fundraising luncheon. She shared her story of how she became an astronaut, her time in orbit aboard the shuttle Challenger in 1983 and 1984, and encouragement to capture the enthusiasm of girls interested in sciences.
