In its first year of competition, St. Mary's Academy's science olympiad team completed the final tournament at the national level. Julia Stadler, St. Mary's team moderator and teacher, stated,
"Overall, we ranked 52nd out of 60, which was higher than we were anticipating, since this is our first year and we were competing against top tier teams who have a lot of experience.
Amy Whitcombe and Michelle Warner earned 6th place overall in the "Sounds of Music" event (where they designed, built, and played musical instruments to music they arranged themselves, then completed a difficult interview on the physics of sound). Their 6th place meant they got to go up on stage to receive a medal!
Our other high placement was 17th in write-it/do-it, an exercise in technical writing and building.
The kids are really pleased with their performance and are excited about next year!"
