TWO ST. MARY’S LACROSSE PLAYERS RECOGNIZED REGIONALLY FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS
Two of the stars of the undefeated St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) lacrosse team have been recognized at the regional level by US Lacrosse and the Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association (OGLA). Sally Roberts and Catherine Davidson, both juniors and two of the team’s top players, were selected for the 2007 US Lacrosse Association’s NW Regional Team. The team, comprised of elite varsity players from all over the Northwest, will play in Lehigh, PA at the US Lacrosse Division National Tournament over Memorial Day weekend. In addition, Catherine Davidson has also been selected to the 2007 OGLA All-Star Team. As a member of the team, Catherine will travel to the Vail Lacrosse Shootout in Vail, Colorado in June and the United Sports Training Center (USTC) Fall Classic in Downington, PA in October.
Sally (41 goals, 16 assists) and Catherine (44 goals, 21 assists) have scored 85 of the team’s 206 goals and they have 37 of the team’s 88 assists. However, those statistics don’t do justice to the overall dominance and depth of the team. Excluding Sally and Catherine, six girls have more than ten goals and nine girls have at least two goals. ”It’s such a great, dynamic group of girls,” says senior and co-captain Maggie Cech, “we are under such great coaching that it’s not hard to see why we’ve been so successful this season.” When asked about Catherine Davidson and Sally Roberts, Cech said, “Sally and Catherine are extremely strong players, each scoring multiple goals per game and helping keep the pace of the game quick.” The girls of the SMA varsity team own a spectacular 14-0 record, including 8-0 in league play. The junior varsity (JV) team is also strong with a current record of 8-4. Both teams beat Lincoln High School, a school with one of the best lacrosse teams in the state, on April 12th, varsity by a score of 7-4 and JV by the score of 7-6. The varsity team is ranked #1 in the state, a first for the program. They are looking forward to the state competition and all the challenges that the rest of the season has in store.
