ELITE ST. MARY'S ROWERS COMPETE AT HEAD OF THE CHARLES

(Portland, OR, October 10, 2007) Nine Portland area high school athletes are headed to Boston on Thursday, October 18th to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the world’s largest two-day rowing competition. 

The Head of the Charles, one of the oldest rowing events in the US, draws more than 7,500 athletes from around the world, competing  in 55 different events and attracting up to 300,000 spectators!

The women’s  “varsity eight” from Rose City Rowing Club, “Portland’s Youth Rowing Team,” include: Davey Barnwell (St. Mary’s Academy), Claire Brown (St. Mary’s Academy), India Dubois (Lake Oswego High School), Anneke Gronke (Cleveland High School), Elise Guinee-Cooper (PCC), Elise Newhouse (Grant High School), Elena Pinder (Central Catholic), Isabelle Prosser (St. Mary’s Academy) and Maura Timoney (St. Mary’s Academy) will be competing against forty-nine other teams in the Women’s Youth Eights on Sunday, October 21st.

These young women practice each afternoon out of the Portland Boathouse located at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge. They are coached by Nick Haley.

Rose City Rowing Club is open to all high school and upper level middle school students  in the Portland area  – on the web at www.rosecityrowing.org. Currently 95 young people participate in Rose City Rowing’s programs. They compete in regattas from San Diego to Victoria BC.  Many are placed into Division 1 college rowing programs after graduation from high school.
