ST. MARY’S ACADEMY HONORS 21 STUDENTS IN 2007 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

 

 

St. Mary’s Academy Principal Patricia Barr has announced that nine St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) students have been named state Semifinalists and twelve named Commended Students in the 2007 National Merit® Scholarship Program.  A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Barr to these scholastically talented seniors.

Of the more than 1.4 million students who took the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), SMA students Sarah Goff, Camber Hansen-Karr, Helen Helfand, Esther Horowitz, Karin Loch, Elysa Melzer, Kate Moening, Anne Walla, and Madeline Wyse are nine of 16,000 national students named Semifinalists, and will continue in the Merit Scholarship® competition toward Finalist standing. 

Kali Albert, Elsa Ballard, Fiona Bayh, Bridget Brewer, Cameo Cheung, Jessica Chval, Hannah Concannon, Jennifer Dentel, Marnie Hazlehurst, Meagan Nordmark, Stephanie Rhinehart, and Claire Stolowitz are among the approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2006 competition for Merit Scholarship® awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percents of the students who entered the 2006 competition.

A spokesperson for the National Merit Program commented, “It is important to acknowledge the attainments of the academically talented students and to credit schools for the key role they play in their development.”

Founded in 1859 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, St. Mary’s Academy of Portland, is Oregon’s oldest continuously operating secondary school and one of 716 all-female schools in the country.  The student body represents a diverse background of young women from over 30 urban, suburban, and rural communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington.  St. Mary’s Academy is distinguished by its development of the whole person, and is the only school in the state to receive three U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools awards.
