LACK OF FURNITURE PART OF WEEK OF GLOBAL SOLIDARITY AT ST. MARY’S ACADEMY

Each spring, St. Mary’s Academy creates a Poverty Awareness Week to help its students relate to their neighbors – globally and locally – and create acts of solidarity to come to a deeper understanding through experiencing some of the daily hardships others endure.  This year, Monday, April 7 through Friday, April 11, will be filled with teachings and simple acts to demonstrate unity.

  • Monday, April 7th: The school will take off their shoes before entering classrooms.  This act is designed to place students in a new cultural situation to help understand others.
  • Tuesday, April 8th: The school will reduce the use of electricity in the hallways and classrooms.  This is designed to encourage the students to ponder our reliance on electricity while others have none.
  • Wednesday, April 9th: Poverty Awareness Day activities.
  • Thursday, April 10th: Students will sit on the floor and not use furniture.  This will promote thoughtfulness about the comforts that allow our students to develop routines and daily habits to provide reassurance and stability.
  • Friday, April 11: The school will limit the amount of school supplies we use in the classroom.  By using fewer materials, we hope to experience the daily challenges faced by many students around the world.
