Doernbecher,
the first full-service children's hospital in the Pacific Northwest,
offers the most comprehensive program with full-spectrum pediatric
care for hospitalized children. As a volunteer you would work with
patients, families, and staff to make the hospital experience better
for all. There are approximately 230 volunteers at any given time.
They greatly value the work and commitment of student volunteers;
however spaces can be limited so call early. Must be 16 years old.

Friendly
House is a nonprofit organization that believes in the value of
community. Six different programs help serve all ages and backgrounds
in the Northwest Portland area. Volunteer opportunities for teens are
available in preschool, youth programs, and senior programs. Also
needed are teens to help with seasonal programs like Holiday Store,
which provides food, coats, and gifts to low-income families and
individuals.
The "Friendly Chaps" program is a partnership with the Chapman School. After school and summer time placements available.

Girls
on the Run is for 3rd through 5th grade girls and is an experiential
learning program that combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event
with character-building and self-esteem enhancing warm-ups and
workouts that encourage emotional, social, mental, and physical
development. High school students will act as mentors and
instructors.
Participants
meet twice a week after school for 12 weeks and are led by certified
Girls on the Run instructors. The session climax is a community 5K
event that enables every girl the opportunity to reach her goal.

Become a Homework helper for Refugee kids!
Kateri
Park and Esperanza Court are two affordable apartment complexes in
Southeast Portland. We house both American and immigrant families. The
immigrants are mostly refugees from Somalia, Ethiopia, Burma and
Nepal.
We have many
school-age children who love to learn! Since they can’t get help
with their homework from their families, we run Homework Club Monday –
Thursday from 3 -5:30pm. How would you like to become a homework
tutor, and visit the rest of the world without ever leaving Portland?
Homework Club starts on October 5th this year, and will be
supervised by the PSU capstone program. We’d love to have your help!

Peninsula
Children's Center is the oldest and largest child care provider in
North Portland. A nonprofit organization, Peninsula has the capacity
to serve 245 children ages 6-weeks to 12-years-old. In addition to
quality care and education, Peninsula is committed to helping families
connect with and navigate the other services and agencies available
for assistance. Teen volunteers are needed in the classrooms on a
regular basis.

Providence
Child Center provides a continuum of services for children including
skilled nursing care, a Montessori School, a child development
program, and comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation and treatment
services. The Center for Medically Fragile Children at Providence
Child Center is a nursing facility providing care for children in a
residential setting. Fifty-eight beds are dedicated to children
needing long-term chronic care and short-term respite, and end-of-life
care. Volunteers are needed in many capacities within the Child
Center. This has proven to be a very meaningful site for SMA students.

This is a
Jesuit middle school located at St. Andrew Parish. During the school
year, students are at school until 5:15 P.M. Volunteers are needed to
help with Homework Club from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. The work focus is on
tutoring, games and supervision, and building relationships with the
students. It is challenging work that will give great rewards.
Homework Club can only use up to 8 high school volunteers/day, so sign
up early.
DURING THE SUMMER:
Volunteers are VERY MUCH NEEDED to work with the prospective 6th
graders. The "Summer Academy" for 5th graders hoping to attend St.
Andrew in the fall begins in July and runs for most of the month from
approximately 8:00 am - 11:00 am. Call for more information.

nationally acclaimed treatment center for boys with emotional and

site is very close to SMA! The YMCA is a nonprofit organization
providing quality, affordable childcare to the Portland Metro area.
Market Street is the newest Child Development Center, and it serves
up to 80 children. The children range in age from 6 weeks to 5
years. They follow the Creative Curriculum in the classroom and teach
social skills every day. They also have an outdoor play structure
and an art room. Fun! The Child Development Center is looking for
volunteers to help in all these areas. Background checks will be
