Five SMA players earned MHC All-League honors. First Team: Zoie Sheng, sophomore. Second Team: Becca Fuhrer, senior; Honorable Mention: Nanea Woods, senior; Monica Gorciak, senior; Sha'Nice Storey, sophomore; Anjenae Torregano, freshman.
Swimmers Finish Strong at Districts & State
The swim team finished an outstanding year with a strong showing at the district and state meets. The team finished second behind a strong David Douglas team at the district championship held at Mt. Hood Community College on February 12 & 13. Individuals qualifying for the OSAA 6A state meet were Kara Stranski, 50 &100 Free; Ellena Basada, 200 IM & 100 Back; Maranda Alf-Huynh, 100 Breast; Alexis Perry, 100 Back. Also, SMA qualified in all 3 relays. The 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay.
The strong team effort carried through to the state meet where the team finished seventh overall with 72 points. SMA swimmers place 3rd in the 200 Medley Relay, Kara Stranski placed 2nd in the 50 and 100 Free, 6th, 200 Freestyle Relay; Ellena Basada placed 5th in the 100 Backstroke and 9th in the 200 IM; Alexis Perry placed 11th in the 100 Backstroke; Maranda Alf-Huynh placed in the 100 Breaststroke

SMA Nordic Ski Team Places 4th at State
SMA Nordic Team competed in the OISRA State Championships and placed 4th overall. In the freestyle race, varsity point holders were Lucy Whipps, Allie Donahue, Amanda Adsitt, Rachel Struxness, and Emlyn Foxen. In the classic race, the varsity point holders were Lucy Whipps, Rachel Struxness, Sarah Wigginton, Amanda Adsitt, and Allie Donahue. Lucy Whipps represented SMA on the podium making top ten in the State for classic skiing.

Blues Back in the State Playoffs
The OSAA State Basketball playoffs begin tomorrow, March 2. Our varsity squad will be competing for the second consecutive year as the #3 representative from the Mt. Hood Conference. They will be traveling to Eugene to take on the Sheldon Irish at 7 PM.
Ticket prices for the game are $6 for adults & $4 for students at the gate; passes are available for the duration of the state tournament on the OSAA website: www.osaa.org .
Blues Win West Linn Tourney
Congratulations to the varsity and JV teams for winning all their games at the West Linn tournament held on December 4-5. Both varsity and JV teams played Wilson HS on Friday night and then played in the championship game on Saturday. Great job ladies, we are proud of you.


Stranski Signs Letter of Intent
Stand-out SMA swimmer, Kara Stranski, has signed a Letter of Intent to compete for the University of Kansas next year. Stranski has been a big part of the SMA swim program and was a member of the 2009 team that finished third at the OSAA 6A State Meet. Stranski was the 2009 State Champion in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.67 and was a member of the 200-Yard Medley Relay Team that also won a state title. Stranski was also recognized as the 2008-09 Mt. Hood Conference Swimmer of the Year.

Blues Earn All-League Honors
Congratulations to all three fall sports teams on the 2009 season: Cross Country finished first in the MHC and fourth at the OSAA State Meet. Both Soccer and Volleyball finished second in the tough MHC.

Blues Back on the Trophy Stand at the OSAA State Meet
The Cross Country team placed fourth at the OSAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 7 at Lane Community College. Running for the Blues were Seniors Alexa Kearns, Jen Olson, Juniors Netanya Beard, Erin Bergmann, Sophomore Bella Gazzola and Freshman Ellen Patterson.

St. Mary's Varsity and JV teams won their 8th consecutive Mt. Hood Conference title on October 28, 2009 at Sandy high school. Leading the way for the Blues were Lucy Whipps, Erin Bergmann, Alexa Kearns, Netanya Beard, Bella Gazzola, Ellen Patterson and Jen Olson. The JV squad also had a strong showing taking the first 9 places. The team was led by Sophomore India Downes-Le Guin, Molly Walls, Maya Booth-Balk, Julia Tawney, Mickayla Phillis, Isa Almy, Hayley Kruell, Katy Henkle and Nora Helfand. With the win, the team earns a berth to the state meet. The state meet will be held at Lane Community College on November 7.

At St. Mary's, teamwork, leadership, personal growth, and social opportunities are encouraged both on and off the playing fields.
St. Mary's Academy views athletics as an extension of the classroom where students learn the values of hard work, determination, and cooperation, while developing their talents as athletes.
As a member of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), St. Mary's competes in nine 6A level sports — cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, golf, softball, tennis, and track & field — in the Mt. Hood Conference. St. Mary's also competes in lacrosse under the auspices of the Oregon Girls' Lacrosse Association. Additionally, two Blues teams compete in nordic and alpine skiing at the club level under the guidelines of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA).
St. Mary's Academy has won 19 OSAA state championships in five different sports. In addition, the Blues have won four academic state titles, twice winning the OSAA POWERADE Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest percentage of graduating seniors earning a 3.50 cumulative GPA and a varsity letter in a 6A OSAA sanctioned sport. At the conference level, St. Mary's teams have earned 63 titles, 41 as members of the Metro League and 22 in the Mt. Hood Conference, and 2 OGLA State Titles.
Many of the state's finest female athletes developed their skills while at St. Mary's. The all-female environment allows girls to thrive in the spirit of competition. Many former St. Mary's student-athletes are now coaches and share the pride, inspiration, and commitment to the winning history of the school.
