SMA Athletics- At A Glance
At St. Mary's, teamwork, leadership, personal growth and social opportunities are encouraged both on and off the playing fields.

St. Mary's Academy views athletics as an extension of the classroom where students learn the values of hard work, determination and cooperation, while developing their talents as athletes.

As a member of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), St. Mary's competes in 6A level sports — cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, and track & field — in the Mt. Hood Conference. St. Mary's also competes in lacrosse under the auspices of the Oregon Girls' Lacrosse Association. Additionally, two Blues teams compete in nordic and alpine skiing at the club level under the guidelines of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA).

St. Mary's Academy has won 19 OSAA state championships in six different sports. In addition, the Blues have won four academic state titles, twice winning the OSAA POWERADE Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest percentage of graduating seniors earning a 3.50 cumulative GPA and a varsity letter in a 6A OSAA sanctioned sport. At the conference level, St. Mary's teams have earned 71 titles, 41 as members of the Metro League and 28 in the Mt. Hood Conference and 2 OGLA State Titles.

Many of the state's finest female athletes developed their skills while at St. Mary's. The all-female environment allows girls to thrive in the spirit of competition. Many former St. Mary's student-athletes are now coaches and share the pride, inspiration and commitment to the winning history of the school.

History of the SMA Blues
Sports were a major intramural activity until the 1970s when women's athletics became a part of the Oregon School Activities Association. Students at St. Mary's had the advantage of playing on CYO teams, so our teams were ready for inter-school games.

During the 1973-74 school year, after our volleyball team played several other schools, they were invited to a tournament at Portland State University. An SMA alumna who was involved in athletics said that our girls simply could not play wearing cut-offs and t-shirts! She went to sporting goods stores looking for uniforms and found a set of blue and white uniforms that another school had ordered and then canceled. She bought them for half-price, and these became volleyball and basketball uniforms for several seasons. Formerly our school colors were red and white, and now we had blue uniforms!

At games enthusiastic dads yelled, "Come on Blue!" and so St. Mary's Blues became our name, and we then officially changed the school colors to blue and white. From a few bloomer-clad basketball players of the '20s to more than 70 percent of the students involved in at least one sport during high school, SMA has come a long way.
