Co-Curricular Co-Curricular

These are activities held outside the academic school schedule to supplement the existing curriculum. They may earn students academic credit. These activities should not be listed on the forecasting form.

CMS (Campus Ministry & Service Team)
Campus Ministry and Service (CMS) Team focuses on pastoral ministry, prayer, worship, faith sharing, service, and project planning. CMS students develop relationships between the Campus Ministry office and student body by serving as role models and by inviting students to participate in CMS events. CMS students also work as a team to organize liturgies, days of reflection, service projects and to support the retreat outreach at St. Mary's Academy. Completion of Introduction to Religious Studies, an application process, and consent by the instructor and Assistant Principal of Student Life are prerequisites. Students can earn 0.25 credit.

Filmmaking

Students learn the art of the documentary by viewing professional filmmaker's works and creating their own. In small groups, students choose a topic of personal interest, organize the content, write a script for a short documentary, and prepare for an evening presentation. They plan and complete the filming, sound, music, and timing of the documentary. The art of editing is taught and practiced.  For more information on Filmmaking Classes I & II, visit Shannon More's iNet Teacher Site.

Internship
The internship, open on an application basis to seniors, provides at least 65 hours of work experience to enhance a student's academic education and assist in preparation for college and career. Hours may be completed during the summer before the senior year or during senior privilege block. Successful completion of the internship can earn a student .5 credit.

Mock Trial
Mock Trial is a statewide program that allows students to take on the many roles that are part of our legal system. Students research and conduct trials using real-life cases. The research work involved in this activity can earn the student .5 credit.

Model United Nations (MUN)
MUN is a statewide organization that simulates the United Nations. Students become representatives of the foreign lands, presenting bills and arguing issues of foreign policy. The research work in preparing for this competition can earn students .5 credit.

Outdoor School
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors can apply to act as counselors for 6th grade students in the Multnomah County Outdoor School program, which is offered in the fall and the spring. Students must meet St. Mary's academic, attendance, and behavioral standards. Students are evaluated by the Outdoor School staff and can receive .25 credit for each session.

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a .25 credit after school class that meets Fridays from 3:15-4:45 and once a month on Saturday. Students prepare for a variety of engineering, laboratory, and written events and compete at the state competition in early spring. Students may apply in the fall.

TIES (Teaching, Integrating, and Exploring Science)
Students act as mentors for 5th grade girls offering a positive exposure to the excitement and challenge of "doing" science. Students teach topics and coordinate activities, guest speakers, and field trips. Successfully completing these activities can earn a student .5 credit.
