Description of School

St. Mary’s Academy is a college preparatory, Catholic school serving girls in grades nine through twelve. Operated by the Sisters of the Holy Names since 1859, St. Mary’s Academy is located in downtown Portland and currently enrolls 620 students from the Portland/Vancouver area. Seventy-eight percent of the faculty hold advanced degrees. St. Mary’s Academy is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and is a member of the Oregon School Activities Association, the National Catholic Education Association and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. In 1984, 1989 and 1998, St. Mary’s received the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools Program Award.

Grounded in Catholic traditions and values, St. Mary’s Academy provides an environment rich in scholarship, leadership, spirituality, friendship and social responsibility where each young woman can develop her individual potential. Our curriculum actively engages students in exploration, inquiry and analysis, integrates technology, promotes creativity and encourages artistic expression. Forty-eight percent of the students are Catholic and 31 percent are students of color. Need-based financial aid is offered to 42 percent of the students. Ninety-nine percent of our graduates attend four-year colleges and universities.
